A water main break late Thursday afternoon affected 500 Indiana America Water customers and forced the closure of a road near the Hickory Ridge Lake Apartments in Merrillville, officials said.
Cleveland Street and West 57th Avenue were closed as crews responded to the break, officials said.
A 12-inch water main on 57th Avenue, about 100 feet west of Cleveland Street, broke, Indiana American Water spokesman Joe Loughmiller said.
As crews were shutting down that main for repairs, another water main in the 2400 block of West 57th Avenue broke, he said.
The company will be notifying the affected customers by phone of a boil advisory, he said. Those using water for drinking, cooking or brushing teeth should boil water for at least three minutes, he said.
Water service was expected to be restored soon, Loughmiller said about 9 p.m. Crews anticipated completing repairs by midnight, he said.
The cause of the main breaks remained under investigation, Loughmiller said, but they were not caused by anyone working in the area.
