Construction workers working on the new Holbrook school hit a gas line Wednesday morning, keeping Holbrook Junior-Senior High School students outside during a planned fire drill.

Students already were safe in the evacuation area because of the drill when the accident occurred, interim Principal Mary Ann DeMello said.

The Holbrook Fire Department, which already was on scene, contacted Holbrook police to have the campus closed down, and the gas company was notified about the situation, according to DeMello.

After sweeping the building with meters to measure gas levels, firefighters declared the building safe to re-enter. Students and faculty members then returned to classes.

“I’d like to thank our … Holbrook Emergency Services for their attention and immediate response,” DeMello said in a statement.
